Escaping the poverty trap

Every student deserves the opportunity to reach his or her full potential, writes Heather Le Roy

The problems facing the poorest communities in Victoria are massive. Research shows that young people from poor neighbourhoods are much more likely to leave school early, be suspended or excluded from school and underperform in literacy. They are much less likely to enter university or to succeed in vocational education and training. To make matters worse, recent findings show that Australian children born into poor families have little chance of escaping poverty.
