The City Centre is a unique learning space in the heart of Melbourne that offers a range of programs to Victorian Year 9 and 10 students. Schools are provided with support both pre and post their week in the city centre for all our programs. The City Centre has the potential to model a radical reform of the middle years of schooling. All of our programs put into direct action everything that research shows is needed to achieve success in educating adolescents:

  • Providing opportunities for student learning and participation beyond the classroom
  • Making use of learning resources in the community
  • Catering for individual needs in the classroom
  • Providing opportunities for students to explore their own interests, abilities and values
  • Emphasising peer relationships, collaborative activities and cooperative learning
  • Offering meaningful, experiential and active learning connected to the real world
  • Supporting the development of independent learning skills and providing opportunities for their use

The programs offered to public school in Victoria are:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Core program

A week of student-led experiential learning using the city as a classroom. Students undertake interviews, surveys and relevant research within a focus area of their choice. They discover iconic Melbourne sites and participate in city discovery trails designed to develop a greater knowledge and familiarisation of the city and the transport system. The program incorporates workshops that empower young people to step out of their comfort zones and explore themselves as young adults, the city and their place in the world.
